The recent interest in addictive manufacturing (AM) parts arise from various industries, such as the aerospace and defense industries, in efforts to increase cost savings and to exploit the advantages that AM provide over conventional manufacturing processes. This Final Year Project (FYP) serves to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the inspection of these AM parts. This project will explore the surfaces produced in AM parts that will affect inspection methods. Experiments are carried out on Titanium (a material commonly produced by AM for the aerospace industry) specimens that are fabricated by the Electron Beam Melting (EBM) process. The method of inspection used would be ultrasonic non-destructive testing.
