Celestial navigation is used in the past to help sailors navigate across the oceans. Using a complicated instrument called the sextant, the sailor is able to measure a star’s altitude with respect to the horizon. With a reference book containing the data of all known stars, a sailor is able to derive his position at sea using Sumner’s method for geo-location. This project uses Matlab software to obtain an observer's position on Earth, with a series of equations to convert the coordinate systems.
