Dry powder inhalation (DPI) formulations have been playing a critical part to increase the effectiveness of dry-powder delivery for inhalation. Most DPI formulations are composed of micron-size drug mixed with larger carrier particles, which are capable of diminishing aggregation, and aid in dispersion. Moreover, the performance of carrier-based DPI formulations is highly dependent upon interactions between the drug and the carrier particles. A combination of many factors such as particle size, shape, surface area, and morphology give an influence to the drug-carrier interaction forces and aerodynamic properties. In addition to those above factors, carrier surface properties play a key part in the dispersion and deposition of DPI formulations. This dissertation mainly focuses on investigating the effect of carrier surface characteristics in vitro deposition and drug-carrier particles interaction.
