Data collection instruments for active trips in Singapore

Travel surveys are usually conducted using fairly standardised designs and methods. However, these often overlook short active trips which can be critical when designing and providing for infrastructures and policy instruments. This study focuses on different survey methodologies and areas of the network that can be modified to increase active mobility. Survey methods were first drafted and tested through a household travel survey, utilising face-to-face and self- completion survey method. The data collected were analysed to determine the feasibility of each travel data collection methods. Recommendations were suggested to improve on previous travel data collection instruments. This study also considered the public’s perception of ‘trip’ using a perception survey. Based on the data from the perception survey, majority of the respondents considered a walking ‘trip’ to be 10 minutes or more. Hence, a field study was conducted to understand the relationship between intra-building travel time and its influence on the ‘duration of a walking/cycling trip’ where results showed that intra-building travel took a maximum of 2 minutes during morning peak period. A travel behaviour survey was conducted using intercept and online survey methods. The findings from the survey allowed for recommendations to be drafted which include improvements to existing facilities and infrastructures to roadshow safety awareness programmes. The results gathered from this study can be useful for conducting nationwide travel survey and for future infrastructure planning to increase active trips within the neighbourhoods in Singapore.
