Improvement of Bacillus performance in self-healing concrete

Concrete is one of the most significant building materials used in the world. Over the years, self- healing of concrete has attracted so much of interest from the research group as a reliable tool to achieve better survivability and sustainability of the infrastructure. Self-healing mechanism in concrete aims to repair cracks caused by various kinds of shrinkage, creep and deteriorating mechanisms. However, the efficiency of self-healing mechanism has not been achieved and maintained in concrete constructed in harsh environment. This paper aims to review the development of bacteria-based self-healing concrete, and introduce a series of tests to determine the most efficient bacteria acting as a healing agent in concrete to achieve optimal self-healing property. Various bacteria are examined to compare their re-grow rates in the medium. Moreover, as to ensure long-term viability of the healing agent in the concrete, the encapsulation methods by using different concrete aggregates are evaluated and compared to determine the most advantageous encapsulation material. Lastly, the efficiency of bio-gypsum concrete on self-healing was investigated in Singapore’s weather condition.
