Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by the production of autoantibodies (ANAs), these form self-reactive immune complexes with self-antigens which results in tissue inflammation. The SLAM family (SLAMF) receptors are regulators of the innate and adaptive immune response. In mice, SLAMF are located within the sle1 lupussusceptibility locus. When present on a B6 background, sle1 drives B and T cell hyperreactivity and ANAs production.
