Fantasy and desire form an integral part of the portrait of the Orient that is painted by the West. This essay aims to uncover the link between fantasy and the subjectivities that emerge from the desire of the Other by the West. Through an analysis of the opera Madama Butterfly and its thematic descendant M. Butterfly, this essay will reveal how fantasy works as a mise en scene for desire to emerge, and how subjectivity stems not from the subject, but from the Other instead.
