The extractive membrane bioreactor (EMBR) was developed as a point-source treatment for industrial wastewaters. The membrane in the EMBR serves an extractive function – to remove organic pollutants from feed wastewater into a biomedium downstream of the membrane for biodegradation. This concentration-driven process separates the biomedium from the industrial wastewater, which is usually hostile for the growth of microorganisms. This thesis focused on optimising the EMBR for the removal of difficult organics, specifically phenol. The systematic development of new configurations and biofilm control methods was the focus of this work.
