dc.description.abstractA numerical scour model and a Lagrangian-based sediment transport model is developed to obtain a first principle scour model for offshore structures. It is demonstrated that the numerical scour model correlates well with experimental observations and provides insight into the scour initiation mechanism. Likewise for the Lagrangian-based sediment transport model, the predicted bed load and suspended load behaviour agrees well with empirical and theoretical equations. While these models provide much details into the scour and sediment transport behaviour, a drawback is the high computational time requirement for each simulation. Hence, a ‘simplified’ numerical scour model, utilizing an optimization function, is proposed for industrial application. It is shown that such a ‘simplified’ model is capable of predicting the equilibrium scour depth reasonably well. With the continuous advancement of computational capabilities, the contribution from this work will provide a firm foundation for future numerical scour models to be built upon.en_US
