In real world manufacturing, it is desired to have lesser material usage and still maintain the strength of a structure. Utilising additive manufacturing methods will allow us to freely create structure of different patterns and complexity. In this project, designing of cellular structure with the intention of using little material and yet maintain its capabilities in withstanding loading is carried out. Designs are inspired by biological structures around us and will be made in a way that it can be easily reproduced by other existing 3D Printing technologies. Cellular designs are being produced using Polyjet 3D Printing technology in Simulated Polypropylene material. Aim of this project is to study how the newly design cellular structures will fare compared to conventional grid cellular structure when subjected to loading. This will then open up to new opportunities in the world of manufacturing for a light weight yet strong cellular structure that can maximise material usage.
