In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a significantly popular term amongst researchers of various fields. Due to its efficiency, reliability and economic benefit, IoT can become cyber-physical systems when augmented with sensors and actuators. It is undeniable that the environment sensor nodes will have unlimited uses in the very near future. This project is phase one of creating a maintenance-free IoT sensor node that can send and receive information anywhere in the world with internet access. This project implements an economical yet a powerful embedded system which can sense multiple parameters of its surrounding environment, specifically, temperature, humidity and sound pressure. This system takes in raw data from its augmented sensors and displays processed information on screen. It also provides a function for the data to be logged for a predetermined period. This prototype can be utilized as either a portable personal sensor node as a handheld device or a fixed sensor node. For example, this device can be mounted in office cubicles near construction sites to measure the continuous sound pressure level that the person in the cubicle is exposed to in a predetermined period. If he/she is exposed to more than a healthy level, the device can alert that person through LEDs or other sorts of indication. This report describes an in-depth configurations and the design of the hardware elements as well as the software segments used in the system so that anyone can duplicate the project even with very limited knowledge on the embedded systems. The report also discusses current limitations on both the hardware and software components and provides recommendations for further developments.
