This project report presents a study about an attractive direction finding technique inspired by Ormia Ochracea (a parasitic fruit fly) introduced by a few international and local leading researchers in this field. The Ormia direction finding technique attempts to overcome the limitation of antenna aperture in conventional direction of arrival estimation methods. In this final year project, four aspects about Ormia direction finding technique have been studied. First, an extensive literature review on direction finding is conducted and introduction on signal fundamental is covered. Then, in this new approach, a coupling system based on Ormia’s hearing mechanism model is illustrated. Detailed mathematical derivation of coupling matrix is also presented in this report. Thirdly, four different traditional direction finding algorithms are studied, implemented and compared using Matlab program. Finally, implementation of simulation on Ormia inspired DOA estimation technique is completed and the theoretical results of power spectrum from different approaches can be visualized. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed approach and traditional DOA estimation techniques is conducted. The comparison result proves that in most cases, with compact antenna aperture and acceptable array element number, nature inspired direction finding technique achieves higher performance in angular resolution and noise immunity.
