Multi-vortex magnetic nanoparticles for magneto-mechanical cancer cell destruction

In recent years, magnetic nanoparticles have been used in various biomedical research and also the research in targeted cancer cell destruction. The use of biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles in magneto-mechanical cell destruction suggests a non-invasive and localized option of cancer treatment. By exposing cultured human cervical cancer cells (HeLa cells) to magnetic nanoparticles fabricated through this project, at a concentration of 0.1mg/ml, with a 2-dimensional alternating magnetic field at different frequencies, and by allowing different incubation times, the HeLa cells assays are tested with Prestoblue® cell viability reagent for the percentage reduction of the reagent as an indicator of the percentage of metabolically active cells present in the sample. The cell viability test results from this project show the bio-compatibility of our nanoparticles with the HeLa cells and the effectiveness of the magneto-mechanical cell destruction over time.
