Tourism in Singapore is booming. In addition to it, the economic ties between Singapore and China are strengthening and at an all-time high as of last year. This leads to more tourists and businessmen traveling to Singapore for their vacation and business trips. Singaporeans, being bilingual, are able to communicate with the tourists and the businessmen from China. This is the main factor for Singapore to have succeeded in tourism and also its economy. Human translator can be used to help solve communication barriers. However, it requires extra costs and human resource. To solve this language barrier, the ECTranslator which is an Android translator application is being created. The English-Chinese Translator (ECTranslator) is created using Eclipse IDE with the Android SDK tools. It has the functions of doing bi-directional translation between multiple languages instead of only English and Chinese languages, Text-To-Speech (TTS), Text-To-Text (TTT), Speech-To-Text (STT), and Speech-To-Speech (STS) translations. Other functions such as copying and sharing the translated text with others using text messaging and email are also included. Quality testing of the application was done for Voice Recognition and Translation functions. The results were obtained and discussed based on 25 test samples. This report will discuss more on the Functions, Literature Reviews done for this application, Layout Implementations, the Problems Encountered while working on it and some possible recommendations for future enhancements.
