Layered manufacturing (LM) processes such as stereolithography apparatus (SLA) and selective laser sintering (SLS) are commonly used to produce objects from CAD models by adding layers to materials that creates the solid part of the desired geometry. The initial capital outlay, maintenance and material cost of these processes tend to be high. Such LM systems tend to fabricate parts using a constant build layer thickness, which leads to a compromise between rapid production with large surface inaccuracies, and slow production with high precision.
