With global warming posing an imminent threat around the world, there is a need to address this issue to ensure that the consequences stemming from climate change, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather patterns and increasingly frequent floods and droughts, do not intensify. One such initiative is the introduction of green buildings which have an increased efficiency with regards to its usage of energy, water and materials. Given this growing need for green buildings, rating systems for green buildings have been developed to objectively assess how "green" a building is. In Singapore, the BCA Green Mark Scheme is used as a rating tool to differentiate between green buildings and conventional buildings. There are many articles promoting Green Mark as a rating tool but very little research has been done on the cons of Green Mark. This report investigates the success of Green Mark as a rating tool and suggests areas for improvements through a case study of City Square Mall. This research was carried out through gathering articles from recognised sources and conducting surveys among building professionals. With that, a well-rounded view of the effectiveness of the BCA Green Mark rating tool can thereby be observed and subsequently evaluated. It was found that the Green Mark rating tool is effective to a large extent in establishing what is required for a building to be "green". However, the survey results have suggested a need for improvement in order for it to become a better rating tool for the buildings in Singapore.
