Stigmatization of people with mental illness is significant in society and welfare of public health. This study assessed the level of knowledge, attitudes and awareness towards mental illnesses among NTU undergraduates. Self-report questionnaires which gathered demographic information, knowledge, awareness, attitudes and social distance information towards mental illness were used. Those aged 21 and above significantly have higher total score of knowledge compared to those aged 20 and below (P= 0.032). Undergraduates who were aged less than 21 were significantly less likely to select “I know it very well” to the knowledge of common mental disorders (P= 0.0121) compared to those aged 21 and above. Undergraduates who were in year 2 (P= 0.0403), year 3 (P= 0.0073) and year 4 (P= 0.023) of their study were significantly more likely to choose “I know it very well” to similar knowledge compared to year 1 undergraduates. Results also showed that undergraduates have insufficient knowledge in areas like causes and treatment of mental disorders. Undergraduates were generally tolerant and accepting towards mental health issues. The response rate of this study was poor which may be attributed to stigma. There is a strong need for education and inculcation of tolerant attitudes.
