Applying supply chain paradigm to CIM implementation
Date of Issue2000
School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Implementing CIM solutions is an elaborate process, especially in a complex environment like semiconductor manufacturing. In addition, implementing a CIM system is a complicated task due to three problems: i. The lack of proven management theories in this field makes such an implementation a"learn-from-past-mistakes" experience, ii. Information technology is often viewed as a necessary evil, and does not attract sufficient investment prioritisation towards it. iii. Implementing a global CIM system is not as straightforward an extension of a local application implementation as may seem; additional variability is introduced, such as differing requirements at different sites, integrating different legacy systems into the new whole, etc.
