This paper will focus on feminist retellings, the appropriation of traditional narratives in order to undermine conventional or stereotypical representations of female identity by patriarchal systems. The emergence of rewritten fairy tales in the late twentieth century sought to reclaim mythic and archetypal female figures for their own, undermining the containment of women's experience within these archetypes. With the deconstruction of these fairy tales and myths, they reconstruct a more humanised portrayal of the female identity, and rebuilding it on their own terms.
