Numerical study of circle hollow section (CHS) Y-joints in fire (ST-25AB)
Date of Issue2013
School of Civil and Environmental Engineering
In this research, the structural behaviour of circular hollow section Y-joints in fire condition had been studied. The objectives of this research are mainly three which are: (1) to study the behaviour of circular hollow section (CHS) Y- joints subjected to in-plane bending. (2) to build a database of the ultimate strengths of CHS Y-joints at different temperatures (3) to compare Y-joint behaviour and strength with the previous study on T-joints. Finite element analysis software, ABAQUS, will be used for modelling joint numerically. After verifying modelling techniques with available experimental result, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on joint moment capacity. Y-joints structural behaviour and stress distribution had been carefully monitored during the deformation process. Ultimate strength of Y-joints with regard to different brace size has also been studied. Finally a comparison between T and Y joints has been conducted in terms of joint behaviour and their ultimate strengths. Possible factors that can contribute to joint strength difference between T and Y joints were given at last.
