Silver-modified 3D dentritic TiO2 microspheres for water disinfection/decontamination under solar radiation

Silver(Ag)-modified 3D dendritic titanium dioxide (Ag-TiO2) microspheres with 1D ultra long nanowires was successfully fabricated/synthesize with a size of ~2 micrometres. With its hierarchical 3D dendritic structure with 1D ultra long nanowires, Ag-TiO2 was found to be more effective in disinfection and decontamination process as compare to the commercial TiO2 P25. The Ag doping has successfully mitigated the shortcomings of the TiO2 and fully maximizes the photo-catalysis capability of TiO2. However, there is an optimum amount of silver dosing. In this case, 0.5% of Ag doping on to TiO2 displayed the best disinfection and decontamination ability in comparison with 1%, 2% and 5% of the silver doping. 0.5% of Ag-TiO2 microspheres is able to achieve high performance, high flux, low fouling, and high removal rate of pollutants. This high performance would result in longer lifespan of membrane. Thus, it is believed that this research played a significant role in the advance technology of water membrane in disinfection and decontamination process.
