Synthesis of new materials for organic solar cells

Based on donor-acceptor configuration and quinoid structure bandgap reduction strategies, as well as addition of a long alkyl chain to improve solubility, 5 low bandgap polymers have been synthesized and characterized, of which, 3 novel polymer donors, Poly(BBTa2,6F), Poly(BBTa1,6F) and Poly(BBTa1,5F) have been synthesized in a short 5 steps, and Poly(SBTaF) and Poly(SeBTaF) have been synthesized in 6 steps, both using a common route, which is shorter than previously reported routes. Poly(BBTa2,6F), Poly(SBTaF) and Poly(SeBTaF) have absorption spectra in the long wavelength region, exhibiting relatively low bandgaps. Poly(BBTaF) isomeric polymers have high thermal stability too. Poly(BBTa2,6F), new in the field of organic photovoltaics, also proves to be good in charge mobility. The results show the potential in these polymers becoming promising low bandgap donors for organic photovoltaics.
