There has been a very long period since the first appearance of Buddhist monk and nun images in traditional Chinese literature. These images have developed extensively from Wei Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty. In Ming Dynasty, the appearance of Buddhist monk and nun images in traditional Zaju had increase drastically. The diversity and variety of these images are not seen in any forms of literature in the past. However, current studies on it are highly inadequate. The author believes the study of Buddhist monk and nun images in traditional Zaju of Ming Dynasty will not only provide a holistic view of Zaju, it can also contribute to the understanding of monks and nuns in the reality world. The basic structure of this thesis includes: 1) Collation of Buddhist monk and nun images since the Wei Dynasty. 2) Consolidate and analyze the images of Buddhist monk and nun in Ming Zaju. 3) Discuss the social and political reasons that contribute to the formation of these images and also the aesthetic value of it.
