The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the rationale and underlying principles behind the development of sport as a means of nation building in Singapore since 1959, using functional theory and logical interpretations. The dissertation is concerned with explaining the major factors for the development of sport in the country. Most of the local policies in sport in the early days performed functionalistic roles in providing healthy life, maintaining economic productivity and facilitating social unity among the people; all of which are rudimentary to nation building. Since the 1990s, due to the country's better economy and affluence, greater resources have been committed to elite competitive sport.
