The idea of cultural identity varies in different societies. And it is this variation that makes it unique. Drawing upon such ideas of identity and incorporating it into design, it makes work more personal for the designer and members of the designer’s own community. This allows users and consumers to better relate with products and the story behind them. This quality is a means to generate unique products and explores the possibility of using product design as a medium for personal expression and social commentary. Part of this unique cultural identity lie in the idea of traditional craft. In a world of mass production, traditional craft can be interpreted in new and contemporary ways giving products more identity and soul. This project aims to express cultural identity using product design as a platform, and products as a medium for expression with regards to social commentary as well as to look into the relevance of craft in today’s contemporary society.
