Toni Morrison's Beloved is a novel that has been widely acclaimed for its contention with contemporary themes in a historical backdrop. This essay discusses the move towards a reconstituted history, essential to black subjectivity, that Morrison espouses in her novel. At the same time, the question of whether historical recovery is feasible, or practical, remains in light of postmodernism's skepticism of history as an epistemelogical tool.
