The CAT3116 model engine is currently installed on 98 units of PSA's Ottawa Prime Movers. Since January 1997, there were 16 failures due to cracks found at the engine block water jackets. To find out the cause of failure, one of the failed engine blocks was chosen for further analysis. Visual and Metallographic Examinations were conducted on the cracks with photo-documentary proof. The main mechanism of failure to the engine was corrosion fatigue, which appeared to be due to the corrosiveness of the water in the cooling system, in combination with the high operating temperature and vibration on the engine. Several recommendations on improvement to the current maintenance practices were suggested for consideration.
