This dissertation presents new holistic approaches to automation system design education by emphasizing on the acquisition of knowledge in design through the adaptation, adoption and replication of expert designers' explicit and tacit knowledge. Design students lacked the capacity to be aware of and to identify the type of information and knowledge needed to carry out their design tasks and this predictably leads to substandard design work.
