The Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 was one of the most powerful disasters recorded in history. Approximately 250,000 people were killed and many more missing or displaced. Indonesia was the hardest hit, particularly the province of Aceh which witnessed the highest number of casualties and massive destruction.
