This doctorate thesis focuses on the innovation of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) devices with a new class of material known as photonic bandgap (PBG) crystals for control of photons not achievable with legacy dielectric waveguide systems. Specifically, silicon is the material of choice being investigated for the PBG PIC devices designed to address the objectives of macro-to-micro optical system integration; ultra compact optical device footprint; high optical performance; realization of deep sub-micrometer length scale photonic crystal devices and also demonstration of PIC PBG functionalities.
