The durability of building sealant systems in the tropical environment
Date of Issue1995
School of Civil and Structural Engineering
The earliest sealants, or as they were more commonly known, caulks, were used to fill cracks and to provide waterproof joints. Advanced methods of constructing building facades, using lighter materials, introduced movement joints that required flexible and more durable sealants. This, saw the development of elastomeric sealants, with high elongation and low tensile strength. More recently the advent of structural glazing introduced strength as an additional function required of the sealant.
