Ultrasound backscattering from cancellous bone
Date of Issue2009
School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Ultrasound has potential for early diagnosis of osteoporosis since it able to assessment micro-structural changes via the measurement of broadband ultrasound backscatter (BUB) coefficient. A lower BUB coefficient predicted the higher fracture risk. There are three theoretical models explaining the scattering phenomenon in the cancellous bone: the Faran Model, Weak Scattering Model and the Binary Mixture Model, all of them have shown success in modeling scattering from soft tissue. The main objectives of the study was to assess effectiveness of Binary Mixture Model as the theoretical scattering model from cancellous bone by a direct comparison with experimental measurements, the study explored the correlation between BUB coefficient and age-related osteoporosis.
