Study of a thin absorbing metamaterial layer.

This report documents the research work that we have conducted for the RGM project titled “Study of a Thin Absorbing Metamaterial Layer” over the past one year. Both theoretical characterization and experimental studies have been conducted for designing thin and wide-band absorbers using metamaterials. A few practical implementations have been proposed for designing metamaterial absorbers. The objectives of the project have been successfully achieved with a number novel absorbers designed and tested. This project also results in 6 journal and conference papers. On the hand of theoretical investigations, a novel concept using metamaterials has been proposed to design thin and wide-band absorbers. Theoretical simulations have been carried out to demonstrate that a very thin and ultra-wide band absorber can be designed using a metamaterial layer if a wide band metamaterial is available. Possible implementation of the metamaterial absorbing layer has also been suggested. On the other hand of experimental studies, three new absorbing structures have been presented. They are double-square-loop absorber, single-substrate absorber and doublesubstrate absorber. For all these three absorbers, theoretical simulations by Ansoft’s high frequency structure simulator (HFSS) have been verified by experimental measurements. It has been demonstrated that the absorbers designed using the metamaterial concept exhibit a wide bandwidth while retaining a thin profile. The studies conducted in this project proved that metamaterial absorbers can be designed for broadband properties and small thickness, which should be very promising candidate for practical applications in commercial and military systems.
