This paper joins the continuing debate within International Relations (IR) discourse regarding the relevance of the balance of power approach in the contemporary international and regional order. This paper analyses the phenomenon of alliance building in post-Cold War East Asia as manifested in the balance of power dynamics of two key regional powers - US and China.
