Many in the US defense and foreign policy community expect that a common belief in democracy will make India America's natural ally. That this shared believe in democracy will make India willing to join the United States in an alliance to contain China's rising power. This optimistic assumption is further reinforced by the past history of Sino-Indian tensions that had characterised relations between the two Asian giants. However, closer analysis reveals that both the identity based argument for an alliance and the realist one, are based on serious misconceptions of India and Asia in general.
