The paradoxical trinity of war and the "Centre Of Gravity" (COG) concept postulated by Carl Von Clausewitz more than 150 years ago have been the subject of many controversial studies. Harry G. Summers, in his seminal work On Strategy, was exemplary in appropriating aspects of the paradoxical trinity to rationalise American defeat despite its military superiority in the Vietnam War. However, Summers had based his work predominantly on the U.S. perspective and had not sufficiently acknowledged the superiority of the D.R.V. strategy over the U.S. to win the Vietnam War.
