The membrane bioreactor (MBR) market is currently experiencing an accelerated growth and this is expected to sustain over the next decade. MBRs have been applied in many municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants, proven as an efficient technology for wastewater treatment and reuse. However, the effectiveness of MBR technology is often deterred by several factors, most notably fouling of membrane. The objective of the study is to investigate various factors, such as MLSS concentration, particles size distribution, suction pressure, air flow rate and packing density configuration which affecting the rate and extent of permeate flux decline during the operation of an activated sludge submerged MBR. Experiments are conducted firstly, to investigate the effect of operating parameters on permeate flux and secondly, to determine the optimum operating conditions resulting in controlling fouling with minimum operating cost.
