Multimedia information representation in digital form needs a relatively large storage space. Without compression algorithms to reduce this storage size, multimedia applications will not be economical. If lossy compression methods are used, then this will result in artefacts (blurring, tiling, noise etc.) in the multimedia content. In a networked multimedia environment, there will be a need to transport the multimedia information across the network. This process will also add artefacts (jerkiness, audio/video synchronisation etc.) to the resulting multimedia information. Finally, when the multimedia information is displayed to the user, the user terminal equipment (CPU speed, type of display etc.) will also affect the quality of the multimedia information.
