The major research question addressed here concerns the method to ascertain patterms of yielding displayed by parents in response to their children's requests for products. Research to date has asked only one party, usually the parents, or even just one parent. It is our contention that this is inadequate, as parents and children will hold different views. Response from individuals are followed by eliciting a joint response, within a discussive framework. This quantitative data is supplemented with observations about the child-centricity of the household and the interest level displayed by participants during the interviews. Interviews take place within the home. Differences in the children's and parents' opinions of the same yielding situations are revealed. There are also direct relationship between parents' levels of yielding with the participants' interest levels and with the child-centricity of the household.
