The aim of this paper is to provide an insight into the new business trust vehicle in Singapore by discussing issues which are of greater concerns, the impact on Singapore's economy with the introduction of this new investment vehicle, as well as the likelihood of business trust in fulfilling its initial purpose of adding vibrancy to Singapore's capital markets. The issues covered in this paper include the criteria of being a trustee-manager of business trusts, having a single entity as the trustee-manager, the level of protection granted to creditors of a trusteemanager, the distribution of dividends out of cash profits and the issue of not having limits on the gearing ratio for business trusts and rights of unitholders. Specific references are also made to Canada's Income Trust and Australia's Managed Investment Scheme.
